2001 Mercruiser 7.4L with Velvet Drives. 2.8:1 units. 500 hours.
Started hearing a noise in the starboard tranny whenever in gear. It sounds like a light tapping, but it's quiet. I can only hear it if the radio is off and the enclosure is open. I pulled the boat thinking something was wrapped around the prop, but it was clear. No noticiable noise in neutral. Until I got down into the engine room.
With both engine running (in neutral), the starboard tranny seems to be a little louder than the port. The fluid is red and transparent and doesn't have any burned smell to it. It seemed to quiet down a bit after getting up to temp.
Any thoughts?
