Velvet Drive Problems

I have a 1990 Dixie Ski Boat mercruiser blue water inboard (350 chevy) with a velvet drive tranny. I have not used it this year, yesterday I put it in the water when I tried to go foward it came out of gear. after it warmed it, it went into gear and was fine. It always went into reserve fine. It has never given any problems prior to this. Any ideas on what is wrong?? Also does anyone know what type tranny fluid it uses? I have never changed it, I have owned it about 7 years.

Uses oil type: GM Dexron III, Ford Mercon, Daimler-Benz 236.6 or any SAE 10 hydraulic oil that meets Allison Type C3, Caterpillar TO-2 or equivalent specifications. Oil capacity: 5 US quarts (4.9 liters).
Some high performance applications may result in foaming and leakage from transmission's vent. Under these circumstances, Velvet-Drive suggest using oils meeting Allison Type C3 or Caterpillar TO-2 specifications. In addition, it may be necessary to experiment with fluid level in these applications.

When was the last time the fluid was changed in the unit? Could be time for service. Also some trick shift may help a bit.​

I checked the fluid today and the level was a little low but still on the stick. It does not smell burnt or anything. It does not appear to be atf as it is not red. the fluid looks yellowish, but looks very clean. I have never changed it, I hate to say. I put some tranny conditioner in it but did not have time to try it. I will try it this weekend.
