Good afternoon my fellow boaters,

I have a 1979 bayliner volvo penta 280 and when I have it running on shore in a bucket of water it runs perfectly fine, today I decided to take it out but now it will turn on the die if I let it try and idle and I would have to put starting fluid in the carburetor everything I try to turn it on. I dont understand why on land it works perfect but once in water it dies. Anyhelp will be helpful

There is no way any outdrive should be run in a bucket. Outboards is ok, but not I/O

What motor do you have, the 280 is the drive?

Yes its a 280 drive I shouldn't say a bucket its a big long ice chest full of water.

Still not good, the water is not high enough, you take a chance or damaging the impeller.

No expert with VP and I'm unable to find a 200 C
If its 200 hp might be a 5.0 maybe

Hey @Scott Danforth have any comments

Yes I think its a 5.0 am sure it is actually. Am trying to figure out why it works out of water but when its in water it will stay running but I have to have the throttle pretty high and I can't put it in idle otherwise it boggs down and dies but On land it idle perfectly fine. I have no other way on working on it out of water so this was my best scenario to work on it

Check your compression. If its low (around 100) then the addition of back pressure does not allow for fuel to be drawn in

You need a bucket big enough to submerg the entire drive to prime the pump. These pumps do not self prime. So you toasted your impeller.

Always run on muffs when running on land

Not running right in the water could be anything. Did you service the ignition? What is the compression numbers?

I just ripped apart the housing holding the impeller its still in good condition, I did have the muffs on but the angle of the suction is on a bad spot where it would not suck any water up. I didn't do anything with ignition actually I had to replace starter and tune up the carb and after I did all that it started up and idled on land.

That motor is old enough, you probably have points

The water level has to be even with the pump on the front of the engine. That is impossible using a bucket.

Noted i didn't no that I thought it just had to suck water in and it was okay. Where should I even start

Impellers do not "suck", they only push water. They have to be primed by being submerged. Then when you are underway, the force of the water coming in the water pickups keeps it moving to the impeller to keep pushing thru the system

Use a set of muffs (the ones designed for the AQ series drives), and a cork for the hole in the bottom of the drive

Any certain ones you suggest?

To make things a lot easier how about converting to a Petronic ignition kit.
Sierra marine # 18- 5289. Easy to install and no more points/condenser to worry about.
