I don't know, Charlie. Mine has the opaque nylon washers on my 91' 70 hp. Came from the dealer....

Re: vent and fill plug washer

there are 3 basic types from OMC/BRP. it depends on the plug. the plug with a face ridge uses the nylon washer, the plug with a face groove uses an oring the plug that is smooth faced uses a paper washer, incorrect use can and usually does result in a leak.

The plug and vent look very similar to the ones on my alpha drives.Just a slot for a large flat head screwdriver.sounds like what you refer to as a face groove..??

a face groove is a machined groove on the diameter of the sealing surface(face) hence the term face groove. the mercs always used a smooth face in the alpha and MR, over the years its gone from a black paper washer to orange to blue.
to use an oring, like volvo or OMC you either have to machine the housing or the face of the plug to hold the oring or it squishes out and wont seal. to use paper both sides like to be smooth or it tends to cut the paper up. plastic washers like a ridge on the face to aid in compressing the nylon.

The blue colored washer has not been produced for quite a few years.

The part number 311598 washer is the opaque white one and is used on most motors. That is the one you need, Charlie!

The screws with the orings were used only a few years back in the '80s.

Seahorse, don't know where you are coming from, and usually you are right on, but my Merc seals, right from the dealer, for the last 2 times and the last time was about 2 weeks ago were pale blue; designed to act as a water seal and lock washer all in one!

Texasmark - my merc gasket/washers are blue also, but I think? that they are talking about OMC/BRP/Johnson/Evinrude products?

Hey Texasmark,

I don't know where you are coming from, but the post is about a Johnson Ocean Pro outboard and its #311589 seal, NOT about Merc stuff !

I am still "right on" :)

Yeah. I got tangled up on that one. Sorry for the confusion. Guess I got tangled up concentrating on the problem and missed out on some pertinent details, which has happened before and I know it'll happen again. I have to remember when I'm not on the Merc forum.

Mark
