Vent Symptoms ... could be "SHT"

Hi Folks!

Oh, I'm afraid to ask, but...

What happens when you run an outboard connected to an external tank with the vent on the tank _closed_?

It's a conventional (i.e., non-pressure) tank, and the fuel pump is mechanical (not electric).

Be gentle. Your answer will determine whether this thread, my day and myself should be moved to the "Stupid Human Tricks" forum:eek:

Thanks!
Dave

Usually the motor stops running after a short bit.

And if the tank is plastic, it starts to cave in from pulling a vacuum. BUT, if your really dumb, like me, you CAN continue squeezing the crap out of the bulb and getting it to run for 20-30 seconds at a time while you slowly go crazy trying to figure out WTH is wrong with your motor!!

And after sitting there trying to figure out why it stopped you can sometimes restart it and it stalls again in 2 minutes.

Welcome to the club!!

I too am a member (obviusly). There are several others you may want to know about and avoid joining at all costs!

There is the:

Drove all the way to the lake while trailering the boat only to realize I don't have keys to the boat Club.

The:

I don't need one of those floaties for my keys because I will never drop them in the water OOOOPS! Club.

The:

I only need ONE key to the boat, I mean, I never take it out, right? Where is the key to the freaking boat?!?!?!? Club.

The:

It's no big deal that my bilge pump doesn't work, my boat doesn't leak and MAN that's a lot of rain and we're filling up fast! Club.

and of course, the infamous:

Of course I put the plug in, what do you think I am, STUPID? Club.

Of course, I'm not a member of any of those....;)

So go post it on the SHT forum.

You probably did no damage to the engine, and minimal if any to the gas tank.

good luck

ah, but I had my daughter's boyfriend out to teach him the basics of boating. My ego will take some time to recover

My son did that once. Somehow the engine was still running even though the the 12 gal plastic tank was sucked down to about a six!
