Verdict on head gaskets

Is Sierra and other aftermarket head gaskets just as good as the quicksilver ones I would get at my local merc dealer? Paying $20 extra for quality parts is no big deal for me, but if sierras head gaskets have worked fine for others I will save the $20.

I have good luck with Sierra parts,but haven't used their gaskets.<br /><br />But since Merc gaskets are $49.00 a pair,and you say Sierra are only $29.00 a pair,I think I'd be leary.<br /><br />DHP

The merc's are $30 while the sierra's are $18.09 here @ iboats. To be safe I'll order the quicksilver gaskets and forget about it.

I was gonna say Merc (ones I have had) don't have head gaskets; water jacket yes, head, no....one piece block.<br /><br />But then I noticed you were talking about a 200 hp and as I recall Cosworth out of England made those (some of those high hp 6 cyl Merc) blocks and may indeed have a head....like OMC does...did. It'd be interesting to know.<br /><br />Does your engine have a Cosworth built block and does it have a head gasket?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Mark

mark-<br />yeah it has a head gasket. Your thinking of the inline mercs. With early V6's they had a cylinder head and head cover with of course a head gasket and head cover gasket. This two piece head was replaced with a one piece head (which is what I have) and hence just one gasket.<br /><br />Hope this helps
