if you need to take the carps off it's alot easier to get to it that way, if you've got it all lined up right i use a long pair of needle nose plairs to get the pin in place

Re: very frustrated

well, I have gotten my water pump all back together (I think!). Now I need to reconnect everything. I am having a terrible time getting the shift rod reconnected to the shift lever. Any suggestions or words of wisdom??

Yeah that can be a pain. Set the leg into reverse (grasp the shift rod with one hand and pull up while turning the prop slowly with your other hand.)

Once in reverse, be sure the shift rod is positioned correctly to receive the shift pin when you get it in there. The hole in the shift rod receives the pin from right to left as you face the powerhead while installing the leg.

The bugger will likely turn on you as you insert the leg, as mentioned use some needle nose pliers or a long screwdriver to ensure it is correctly positioned.

Then you need to push in towards the powerhead on the shift lever to open the clip and turn it until it's over the hole in the shift rod. Then release the shift lever to close the clip.

It's a bit hard to describe but if you get a flashlight and look where the shift rod meets the shift lever, try pushing in the shift lever and you will see the clip mechanism open and close.

HTH

cheers~!
