'34 foot boat having 27 people on board' . . . probably the reason for the capsize. You would also have to assume that they were mostly on one side of the boat???

The story also said that the children were in the cabin. I image that they were unable to get out.

I have a problem with a certain family member continually pressuring me to overload. I hate to say I used this to remind her of why I won't.

Investigators are working to recover the boat, which was "a very recent purchase,"
This makes sense to me too. All speculative at this point, and we need to be better than the news at respecting that ;)

Very sad no matter how you slice it. Children depend on us to keep them safe :(

A fast moving storm was going through the area and one witness said the entire boat came out of the water as it turned sideways. Sounds like a whole lot of things were going on ... overloaded, new to them boat, maybe newer to boating, a storm, a big wake ... lots of variables that ended in tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are for the families and friends of the 3 children that perished.

So sad and preventable. Only a few miles from me. Combination of too many people on the raised bridge, turning sharply above a safe speed, fear from approaching lightening filled squall, excessive boat wakes from fleeing vessels, and unfamiliar operator with a newly purchased vessel all played a part. As written, children are not required to wear pfd while in the cabin in this size vessel. Fairly certain pfd's would not of benefitted these poor kids anyway who were trapped in an overturned and submerged vessel. My sympathy to the families and hope the lessons learned prevent future incidents.

It was THE topic at our Power Squadron Saturday-Sunday raft up. One of our participating boats is a 1984, 34' Silverton Convertible, same as the one that capsized. We were all (including the owner) scratching our heads trying to figure out how they managed to pack 27 on that boat. 12-14 in the cockpit means standing room only. 3 in the cabin... that leaves a minimum of 10 people on the bridge (standing room only again), unless a few were illegally riding on the bow. More recent reports state that max capacity for that boat, according to Silverton's own advertising, is 15.

Ignorance, inexperience and lack of common sense = tragedy. My heart bleeds for the families of the children.
