Re: Veterans

ilmostro,

I was at Group Monterey from 87 to 89. Tough duty huh. :)

They've made that a Station now, I think it falls under Group San Fran. You should have been there right around the 44' to 47' conversion. Did you ever get to ride on that boat?

No, unfortunately. I think they went to the '47 about 1 year after I left. I'd love to have been able to go on that boat. And yeah, real tough duty:) The toughest part of that duty was actually going to work in a place with such great restaurants, beautiful scenery, water sports, and Laguna Seca race track.

Yeah I know what you mean. Spear fishing under you own private pier was real rough too. I kinda felt bad carrying a bag full of fish up the warf when nobody else was catching much with their poles. Okay, no I didn't.

1995-1996 USMC Camp Pendleton, San Diego. Was forced out early due to perforated eardrums and the "Clinton cutbacks".

TD,
I hear ya about Zumwalt. His Z-grams did nothing more than turn a structured, professional navy into a haven for unkempt, sloppy, would-be sailors who had no respect for superiors and tradition.

US Navy 1966 - 1972 ETN 2.US Navy BE&E, ET A school. NAVCOMSTA Wahiawa, Hawaii 1968-1971. USNR 1971- 1972
Hawaii was rough duty. Pineapple fields and lots of lobster. :p Just a few miles from the North Shore. After a year and a half in school, two half years Hawaii and into the Reserves back in Florida.
Reserve ships were the USS Beatty DD756, USS Tweedy DE532
I too left the reserves due to Admiral Zumwalt and the lack of love for the blackshoe Navy.
Great experiences, many of which I still hold dear to my heart.

I'm always amazed at how many people I meet who have some experience with that building. For me, it was 40 years ago, so I've forgotten just about everything about it. My Russian has gone to pot, although I can still carry on a simple conversation.

I imagine much has changed in 40 years.
