On my VNF antena there was a 6" piece that broke off the end of the antena, :p does this interfere with its performance

Re: VHF antena

If its got a hunk of wire hanging out of the end, then yes, but if it broke off before the actually antenna element then you're probably OK. It is possible that, depending on what antenna you have, that the foam core that some makers use to hold the stripped wire in place came off and the wire dropped back down into the antenna. The better antennas use a brass rod as the radiating element, so its easy to see.

Anyway, generally if nothing's hanging out you're OK but if you have or know anyone who has an SWR meter you should stick it on there and check it before you do any prolonged keying of that mike. If the emitting wire fell down onto the braid, which acts as a ground plane, it will short out the antenna and harm your radio.

Thom

Re: VHF antena

Jcoop
I hate to ask this but what type antenna did you get. There is a big difference in antennas. In the 6 db 8 foot antennas I would say can almost double the number of radio you here and also nearly double the range with a good antenna. The antenna much more important than the radio in my opinon.
