If you don't have enough of the coax sticking out to install a male connector, you need to replace the antenna. They do not come apart

Thanks there is some I can splice on to.I thought it would be good to avoid a splice.

It's good to avoid putting a connector where it is going to be exposed to weather. If you have to, there are ways to waterproof them. Ham sites show ways to do it. Won't be pretty though.
