I have a Uniden vhf,the problem that I'm having is that it will power up (display lights come on) but I dont pick up any static ( squelch) and it won't transmit in the boat. When I pull the boat home it will function fine on the battery only, in the driveway, hauled it to the lake this AM and tried it before putting in water and it wouldn't work. I have checked all connections, Voltage etc. I am out of ideas to solve this problem. If any of you have a suggestion please help!

I only read your handle but welcome aboard mate,<br />I take it from your description of the problem that your radio is fine in your driveway on the battery but when you are under power you get nothing not even local singals. Try replacing your supressor or if you do not have one fit one.

Re: vhf radio trouble

It could be a lot of things but since it will not receive or transmitt my guess is the master oscillator may be unstable. Very common problem. The cause is usually the crystal. It may still work at one temperature with no vibration. Todays radio's use a PLL (phase lock loop) system to set channels. In the old days you had a two crystal for each channel, one for transmit and one for recieve. Problem is unless you can put in a new crystal yourself it is probably not worth fixing. If it was a receive only problem I would say try a external speaker as the speaker is also a common problem but will not stop the transmit. Can be many other thing s also like a internal voltage problem. Make sute you have at least 12 volts to the radio.
