I am looking for a VHF radio that will talk back to my Lowrance 480M GPS. There are many radios that have NMEA in, and some that have NMEA out- but only link with specific chart plotters. Like Standard Horizon only talks back to Standard Horizon chart plotters. I would like the ability for received DSC data to show up on my GPS screen and not spend over $200. I am looking at the Uniden UM525 and Standard Horizon's Quest Plus.

In the NMEA protocol there is now a standard data sentence for passing position polling data. This should help insure that devices of different manufacturers can interoperate. If you get a Class-D rated DSC VHF Marine Radio, it should be able to provide the proper output for display, assuming your chart plotter is compliant with the standard as well.
