ok fella's as spring time is nearing agian its time to start focusing on the boat and getting her ready for summer..i have decided to upgrade the vhf radio. the current set up is probaly as old as the boat. (1981) works fine but just big and bulky and ancient. looking thru the 100's of radios out there i am really leaning towards the standard horizon. or maybe the cobra. model numbers not yet decided. thats where you guys come in. i will give my boating uses. mostly fresh water lakes for pleasure cruising and water sports. BUT there are the few times a year of taking her to the gulf of mexico and the geargia coast for salt water fishing. not the flats but actual deep water. maybe 10-12 miles out. so my question is which radio do yall reccomend? i have a hand held gps but was looking at maybe a vhf with built in gps. i have only found a few of them out there. but i am not sure i really need the built in gps as my old garmin is still ticking strong. i have read nothing but great reviews on the standard horizon. its roughly 150 bucks every where i have found it. the cobra is my second choice (unless someone informs me of a better radio) and the cobra isabout 100 bucks everywhere. this is for the cobra mr f75. and the standard horizon is the gx1200. thanks guys and gals.

Re: vhf upgrade advice

Standard and Icom have always been the 2 companies with the biggest market shares. I have owned several of both for years and never had a problem with either.

COBRA is best known for cheap CB radios.

Standard-Horizon radios are used as commercial-off-the-shelf equipment on military vessels.

This should help you decide on which brand of VHF Marine Band radio to choose.
