Ok about a month ago I hit a ladder in my yard with my prop dinged up the prop. I replaced the prop and the lower unit because i thought a bent prop shaft was causing the vibration. Well i was wrong. With the new lower unit the vibration is still there. The weird part is it only does it in gear so I just assumed it was the lower unit since it only did it in gear. Well i pulled the top cover off the upper unit and the gears look fine i checked the u joints and they are not sloppy. I was able to move the upper drive shaft kinda wiggle it back and forth maybe 1/16 of an inch or so. Is this too much play and could be causeing the vibration and noise.

Thanks,

Gears grinding at idle

Gears grinding at idle

So I installed a new se 106 lower unit apparently uneedly ( another post) and it shifts into gear f and r just fine but while its idleing there is a grinding noise. Almost like its not all the way in gear. Is it as simple as adjusting the shift cable or is it something internal? I guess i just never thought you would have to adjust the shift cable if it was in adjustment for the other unit.

Re: vibration in outdrive

Did you pull the outdrive off the boat and do any kind of inspection of the ujoints, gimbal bearing, even the upper gears to make sure nothing else was damaged?
Or, did you just assume it all had to be in the lower because that is the only damage you could see?

EDIT:I have also merged both of your outdrive posts today into this one. They are both related, so no reason to have it in two different threads.

Re: vibration in outdrive

Is what you are calling grinding actually the drive dogs not going into gear?
If that is the case, you need to adjust the shift cable.
Yes, it probably should have been the same, but who knows, maybe the cable was just about dead to begin with and now it just can't handle the change.

Re: vibration in outdrive

That is a seperate issue from the vibration in the outdrive. I posted two seperate threads but they must of been merged. The grinding at idle i think is exactly that the dogs not engageing fully and will adjust the cable. I let my brother use my book so I dont have it with me right now I cant exactly remember how to adjust the cable I think I remember the basics but any words of wisdom will help. I have Mercruiser 888. The vibration is what i tried to fix with the new lower unit and it doesnt seem to fixed the problem. I beleive its the upper drive shaft maybe the bearings are shot or something but like i said i dont have my book to check the specs right now.

Re: vibration in outdrive

I think if you get the shift cable adjusted that you might loose the vibration also. It may be the drive kicking in and out of gear.
If you allow it to continue, the shift dogs in the lower will be rounded and will never hold.
To test, just disconnect the shift cable from the shift plate and shift the drive into gear by moving the cable alone. That will put it all the way into gear. Then see if it vibrates or grinds anymore.

Re: vibration in outdrive

Motor doesnt vibrate I think i need to replace one of the shift cables I cant seem to get the adjustments right I think one of the cables are shot now need to figure out which one. After I was able to get it to Lock into forward with no noises there was no vibration from what i could tell in the drive.
