There have been lots of talk about the ever increasing violence in video games, some say that it affects the human behaviour negatively, then there are those who believe there is an argument about the morality of some games, But some experts still remain unconvinced of a link.
How say ye?

Re: video games violence

We've covered this topic before, but I would be glad to state my opinion again.
I believe that it is up to parents to regulate what video games their children play.
I play lots of video games and I am present when my son plays "questionable" video games. He is 11 and understands what is right and what is wrong. I have explained in detail to him, what is accepatble behaviour "after" playing certain video games.
His mother also regulates what games he plays.
I do not agree with some of the content in some video games, but I don't think I will ever totally agree with any corporation.
JMO.
B.C.

Hmmmm. I think that IF a child is agressive and carries some anger baggage, voilent videogames will offer him some violent ways to play it out and make them seem okay.

My generation saw guys shot and beat up in the saturday matinees. A few emulated the bad guys but most of us preferred to emulate Roy Rogers and Sunset Carson.

I don't know if those video games offer any positive role models. I sure don't see any in the ads.

Re: video games violence

It is my view that people in general are becoming much more denesitised to violence and are willing to dismiss violent behaviour.
Some day this will all come back to haunt the entertainment world, from Hollywood to cyberspace.
I am aware that censorship is a blunt object, what is needed is something more in the line of a scalpel.

Re: video games violence

??? Who knows what role violent video games play in society today? There are so many variables today. Television, movies, music videos, the news, mom and dad, mom and boyfriend, friends, war, gangs, etc. Violence is so common. Amongst some groups, it is acccepted, and expected. Lack of role models. Role models of inner-cities are individuals like Snoop-dog, as well as other ganster rappers who condone and often times carry out violent acts in videos and in real life. Single parent homes use to be unusual. I would not even venture a guess as to the percentage of single parent homes in urban areas of the US. Then we have the suburban punk wannabees, that carry out violence to become what they see on tv. I could continue, but, rant off.

Our world is becoming crazier by the moment.

Re: video games violence

It diminishes the human factor.

It numbs the kids to killing anything, so they have less respect for things in life.

I play timesplitters 2 online with my brother - they are not allowed to play it, or watch me play, as I play after they go to bed, more like after they are asleep. They know I play, but they also know I can drive a car, have a drink and do other things that are for adults.

My kids are not allowed to "kill" people - they can blow up robots shoot droids but not people.

My sons 8 and 6 know that even if they go over a friends house they are not allowed to play those type games.

When we got a bb gun - they wanted to shoot animals - I said ok but whatever you kill you have to eat - that quickly changed their minds about what to shoot.

I initially play all the games with my kids no matter what the review says just so that I can see with my own eyes what is going on.

Do their other friends play these games, sure but they also know their friends do things they are not allowed to do.

Tomatolord

Re: video games violence

Violence in video games may be increasing, but violence among actual people, specifically minors, is at an all time LOW. I know I'm much less likely to get mad and yell at someone after I've just killed a bunch of people playing GTA. The same would probably be true if I was crazy enough to actually kill someone.
