Re: Video - Is this '57 Johnson running okay?

Well, since I have it all disassembled, I'm gonna replace everything regardless. Two questions: 1) Do I need to remove the armature plate that all that stuff is sitting on, or can I do the work as-is?

And B) In the photo below, what on earth is the little nipple just below and to the left of the carb opening? With the carb removed, it's screamingly obvious. There was no hose attached there; is there supposed to be?

the job is much easier with the plate removed ( especially for installing new wires). the nipple appears to be the old pressure feed for the old pressure tank, and as far as i know should have a short piece of fuel line attached with a plug ( bolt) screwed into the line. hopefully someone will chime in and confirm that tho as i stick with the smaller omc's from the 50's.

More pix and questions...

How far am I supposed to tear down the carb for rebuilding? I checked the FAQs, and the one I saw is a little vague. "Disassemble the carb and soak it in cleaner overnight." Well, duh.

A few more photos to follow; I think I've been cut off for this post.

Ok lets see if I can remember all the questions.

Those coils are not original. They have been replaced, I cannot pinpoint a year without inspection, either OMC coils from about '89 made in Asia, or another. But not original. May want to test them to ensure they are ok.

Regarding the carb, remove the choke assembly from the bottom half of the carb. Also remove the main nozzle from the upper half, you can see it in pic 2 in your last row of pics sticking straight down from the bottom. A flat standard screwdriver will remove it. Spray it with a little penetrating oil first, I have damaged the end before. Try your best to remove the packing washers from behind the low and high speed packing nuts, you may need to slowly pick it out with dental picks, small screwdrivers, etc.... Let is soak, then wash in warm soapy water, then blast dry with compressed air.

I would remove the armature plate. It is held on by 4 screws, 2 of which are longer and go through the coils. Then you can clean the plate, and re lube the mounting ring beneath it. It is also necessary to remove it to change the plug wires if you are going to do so.

That nipple is not for the pressure tank, it actually connects to the vaccuum cutout switch, which kills a cylinder when there is excessive negative pressure in the intake manifold, from excessive RPMS. It is a safety feature. An example of this would be if you hit an underwater object, shearing your drive pin, or the prop jumps out of the water, or a runaway situation, etc... The cutout switch will kill a cylinder by grounding out a set of points until the excessive negative pressure in the intake manifold stops.

Re: Video - Is this '57 Johnson running okay?

Okay, I got the upper part totally disassembled. You guys may have a basket case on your hands when it comes time to put it all back together. I took lots of notes and photos though. I just cannot stand all that purple paint covering everything and I figure I may as well clean it up now.

I'm going to need to order some parts, too. All the cotter pins are actually short lengths of electrical wire, and some of the screws are mismatched.

Couple of questions: does carb cleaner come in gallons? Or do I have to empty a spray can to soak the parts in it? Also, will that stuff take off old paint? The paint stripper I'm using is foul stuff.

Thanks to all of you for your continued help.

You can buy the carb cleaner in bulk. You could also use Pine Sol, thats right, Pine Sol to soak the carb. They clean the ones that are not too gummed up too much, which would include yours. Doubt it would strip the paint though.

Okay, a brief update and a quick question:

First, it turns out carb cleaner will, in fact, remove old paint. I'll post some pictures later, but suffice to say, my formerly purple carb is now a spotless gunmetal gray. Sweet. I've got the upper part of the car all disassembled and cleaned - just waiting on some new parts in the mail to reassemble it.

Started on the lower half of the carb tonight; it was simpler to disassemble, but I'm unsure how far to go. Does the solenoid - or anything inside the solenoid - get replaced? Cleaned? Tuned? And should the inside look like this:
