This is the first time I haul a passenger in the Cobia Tradewinds. I was a bit worried it would not perform but I am glad to say it did great! This is going around 17-18 mph. At one time later I was thinking of WOT (30mph) just to see if the boat will do it but I doubt that would have been safe for my rider! LOL!

Next try will be a knee board. I will also see if I can get in touch with a skier to see if this rig will do the trick. At 30 mph I think it should but I would not want to have it at wot all the time. At what average speeds do y'all generally tube, knee boarding and ski?

I think you already know the answer to your question. You seem like an intuitive guy and that is all it takes to 'feel' the right speed. You should not go into these activities with some pre-determined program. Just do as you did in your vid and play it by sensative ear.

I find about 17-22 mph on my GPS seems about right weather kneeboarding or tubing. Decide for yourself.

Now, seeing that gold and white 70 Evinrude brings back the memories- learned to ski behind one on a Larson Tri Hull, got right up the first shot, then stayed, wide legged and terrorized, the rest of the way. My bud's dad was on about his fifteenth longneck, maybe he looked back once or twice, I got into the edge of the reedbed on the lake edge and got my ankes whipped raw!

Thank you guys, I just want to be sure I have the hp and speed to get someone up if they try to knee board or ski. I never done it and really not sure I have the power plant for it.

This lake is Mountain Island Lake in nc. It is in Mecklenburg county and it is a small lake, that is why I like it so much. You dont usually get the rowdy crowds that frequent Lake Norman (north of MIL) or Lake Wylie (south of MIL). The water is mostly clear as it dont have a lot of creeks pouring on it. Here is some info on it:

My opinion on approx speeds:

tubing/wakeboarding/kneeboarding...16 to 22

2 skis...23 to 27, depending on rider weight. Heavier = faster. And definitely slower with young/lightweight children.

slalom...26 to 35, depending on rider weight, width of ski, length of rope, and skill level.

Your boat will be ideal for tubing/wakeboarding/kneeboarding. Anyone can do all those things behind a 70.

Your rig will get a person up on 2 skis with no problem, as long as that person is of reasonable weight (less than 240 lbs?). Anyone bigger will drag and drink.

It will really struggle to get a slalom out of the water, but may not be impossible, especially for lighter people and kids. I've done deep water starts on one ski behind a 70 outboard before, and I'm about 195 lbs. I dragged a LONG time but got up. It all depends on skill, weight, and prop setup. Getting up on 2 skis and then dropping one in a safe place on the lake is always an excellent option, especially for learning purposes.

Back in the 1970's, a boat like yours, with a 60 to 80 hp outboard, was very much the "typical" recreational ski boat that EVERYONE used to water-ski. I'd put it pretty much in the same class as the typical 19 foot open bow runabout with a 3.0 or 4.3 I/O Mercruiser that you see pulling casual water-skiers all over lakes today. If it's running well, as it appears to be, your boat will work just as well today for those purposes as it did 30 years ago. You won't need to run WOT for hardly ANY watersports unless you happen to pull a very accomplished slalom skiier someday. (though you'll most certainly need WOT for accelleration, to get people out of the water. Won't hurt a thing.) Enjoy it!

Thanks for the advise!!! Not sure I will be doing anything other than tubing for know but if I do find someone that has the equipment I will probably invite them for a couple of hours just to see what the boat can do. Have a good one!

I have a very similar rig, 15' ebbtide tri hull with a 1975 70hp johnson, and I have tubed, kneeboarded, and wakeboarded behind it without a problem. If you are luging on take off's have someone move to bow, this helps to get it on plane faster. I usually have 2 people up front, someone driving and someone get pulled, this works the best, I ran a 17 pitch on my prop but I think I will be getting a 15 pitch to get on plane faster as I will usually have 3 on the boat and one being pulled.

You can disregard moving people to the bow, I see that the boat you are talking about is not an open bow.

the speed i use, depends totally on the person of the end of the rope. they determine the speed. not the driver, unless to avoid and obstacle. it is the lookouts, job to tell the driver faster or slower. the person in the water should use hand signals thump up faster, thumb down slower and the OK sign. i have since slowed down myself, but younger, loved WOT at 42 mph, on a salom.
