I tow with a Ram which has tow mirrors. It also has a very nice backup camera so no need to put the tailgate down.

I still rely on my mirrors and I key off my spare tire mounted to the side of the trailer. So my very simple advice…move the spare tire mount so you can catch it in the side mirror.

I drove semi’s for a few years, then cube vans, and full sized custom vans for years. So it’s all mirrors for me. As long as I can see the edge of the trailer, preferably the driver side, I’m good.

A new truck with a back up camera will probably wreck my brain.

My wife’s car has a backup camera. I almost never look at the screen. When we load the car she’s always worried about me being able to see out the back window. I tell her “that’s why we have side mirrors”.

I only thing I can image a camera doing for me in my pickup is what my wife can’t seem to manage… guiding me to the hitch.

It might be of use if I owned a trailer that cannot be seen with the side mirrors but I have never been in that situation. Nor do I expect to be.

If all you want/need is a way of being guided to the hitch, there are very easy add ons, like the eyeball camera I bought some years back...I'm sure they have better ones now. Simple plug in with a magnetic base camera.

I had a dot on the winch stand and a dot on the rear glass of my 04. When they were the same size you were over the ball. Before that the box tube just needed to touch the seam for the hatch glass and that was close enough. Even with the camera I use the visual cue on the truck.
