Just got a Viking 6 outboard motor in a boat i just bought, model 64021, ser# 1478. Looks to have been very well cared for externally, did a compression test and got about 30psi in both cylinders, is this worth going any further with ?, it does have spark.
Welcome any comments, thanks.

If you trust your gauge, 30psi is way too low to run. Check the head gasket. It may be blown. If it isn't, then that motor is terminally ill. It didn't get that sick by normal running wear and tear. Something drastic happened. Overheated, or ran without oil comes to mind.

What F_R said.

My thought is the head gasket or flawed testing technique. Either should be easy to fix and worth trying before giving up on her.

Thanks guys,
No, not sure about the cheapo gauge, JB could you describe the proper testing technique please.

Just asked PO what oil/gas mix he was using, said 50-1, specs say 24-1, think we may have found the problem !!

Nah, 50:1 may accelerate "normal wear and tear", but 30psi had to be something sudden.

Re: Viking 6 o/b motor

Well the good news is it runs !, bad news no water out the port on back of leg, can anyone tell me what type of pump is in there and whether parts are available ? Is the pump in the lower leg ? what is the best way to get at it ?
Any help for this O/B novice would be appreciated, thanks.
