Hello,

I just aquired a Viking 6hp that is in almost mint condition. It runs perfect and pumps good.

I have a couple questions about it:
1) how can I determine the year of this outboard?
2) what is the correct ratio for gas/oil?
3) what oil should I use to change the oil in the lower shaft?

Any help would be appreciated. I will try to post the serial number later.

Re: Viking 6hp?

Sounds like you have a West Bend there. bottom end oil is standard #90 gear oil. I would run the mixture 24:1. Let me see what I can find out about the year.

Re: Viking 6hp?

Welcome viking-guy!
That's a 1970 6hp made by Chrysler for Eaton's. Chrysler bought out the West Bend Aluminium manufacturing company sometime in the mid 60s, and their outboard division along with it. Later Chrysler sold it to US Marine who sold the engines under the name "Force". Finally, Mercury Marine picked up Force and put the name (and outboards) to rest in the 90s.
I've got a little additional information on it from a Viking owner's manual:
Horsepower 6 Brake HP at 4500 RPM
Engine two cycle two cylinder, alternate firing
Bore and stroke 2” x 1 11/16”
Displacement 10.6 Cu. In.
Carburetor Float feed
Connecting rod Forged Nickel Steel – Uncased needle bearings at crankshaft. Cased needle bearings at piston pin
Crankshaft Forged Nickel Steel. Cased upper Main bearing. Bronze lower main, centre main and thrust bearings
Propeller Aluminum alloy – 7 ½ Dia. X 7 ½ pitch, Right hand rotation
Cooling Water cooled – positive displacement type water pump
Transom height 15”
Weight 55 Lbs.
Fuel mixture 24:1 1/3 pint SAE outboard engine oil to 1 gallon of regular gas – 85 octane
Avoid ‘Premium’ gasolines with 95 octane and antiknock additives
Recommended Operating range – 4000 – 5000 RPM

I would use TC-W3 rated outboard oil in it as it's far superior to motor oil for outboards. Lower unit oil should be 90 weight outboard gearcase oil (you can get it from Canadian Tire). Don't use plain gear oil as it won't absorb water like the outboard stuff does (in case the gear case leaks).

Fuel mixture 24:1 1/3 pint SAE outboard engine oil to 1 gallon of regular gas ? 85 octane Avoid Premium gasolines with 95 octane and antiknock additives Recommended Operating range ? 4000 ? 5000 RPM I would use TC-W3 rated outboard oil in it as it's far superior to motor oil for outboards. A neighbor at the lake just gave me a Viking 6HP Model 64901, Ser # 1434. Is this the same motor as described above?

The motor looks like new with the exception of a broken Rich-Lean control. Looks the knob is broken off.

Is this a Chrysler/West Bend motor?

Thanks

I just dusted off my viking 6 hp.model#64021.1970 made by chrysler.I read some info from Paul, which was helpful but I think my impeller is hooped and I don`t have a manual to tell me how to acces it or basically whats what inside there. No one in my neck of the woods(near vancouver,Canada) will work on it so I am on my own.Does anyone have a pdf or whatever of the manual .Or a picture with a parts list?
