Hello,
I just brought home a boat won on ebay with a 115 Mercury. The boat is a 79. Motor looks to be simular vintage.

I read all the tilt/trim posts I could find on the site, but could not find one with the same issue.

When I picked up the boat the motor was locked in the trailer position. When I went to launch for the first time I unlocked it and the motor went down slowly by itself.

The trim pump runs in the up position but will not lift motor unless I have someone lift the motor the first couple inches. Then it will lift the motor all the way up.

It will stay for a few seconds then slowly go down.

It will power down as I think it should.

I checked the oil level and it was full.

Then I removed the vent screw and ran it up and down a few times with lifting by hand for the first few inches being required each time. Thought this would bleed the air. Still same problem.

Any Thoughts?

Pump will probably need to be rebuilt. If you cant find any leak / air in the system.

I would say the cylinders need rebuilding and not the pump(When the pump wares out throw it out, there aer no serviceable parts) The cylinders are easy to do ... do a search and you will find where I describe the slipper seal re-assembly without the need for the merc tool. or post back and I can tell ya how to do it ;)
Jon
