I need to set the idle on my 1983 Suzuki DT 50

A friend at work has loaned to me a vintage analog ?SUN? dwell/tachometer. It has settings for 4,6, & 8 cylinders.

Is there a way I can I use this on my 2 cylinder motor to adjust the low idle?

Re: Vintage analog ?SUN? dwell/tachometer

There are two issues here. The tach needs to get an ignition pulse so it needs to be connected to the input to one of the coils. Now then, each coil on your engine fires each spark plug once each engine revolution. In other words, each plug fires every revolution. The dwell/tach you have is for a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder four stroke motor which fires each spark plug every other revolution. To compound matters, that tach was designed for a single coil ignition system so on a four cylinder engine, the ignition produces two pulses per rev. Next, the tach may not recognize the waveform going to the outboard coil. However, it is certainly worth a try. The long and short of this then, is that you set the tach for 4 cylinder and if the tach recognizes the pulses, whatever reading you get, you will need to multiply by 2 to get the correct reading.
