I have a vintage Brooklure 500 Motor that was given to me because it doesn't run. The gentleman said the last time it went into the water it ran for about 5 minutes. It would not stay in gear and it started smoking and then it shut down and he could not pull the recoil on it. Im starting to dabble in small engines but this motor may be out of my league. Any ideas on what may have caused this and how extensive the repair might be. Can anyone help a greenhorn out? LOL. Thanks!!

Might be a broken shock absorber in the lower unit. On the other hand, if he ran it till it siezed from overheating, it may be cooked beyond repair. Well, nothing is beyond repair---you know what I mean.

He said it was just a' smokin away before it stopped, so Im kinda leaning toward the latter..lol I guess i wont know until my hands are dirty. I will definitely check the absorber. I also thought maybe the pump or impellar were shot and he ran it with out it cooling. Im not sure yet if that motor is put together like that. im still a greenhorn to outboards, especially when there from 1950. Thanks for the quick response F_R.

Time to start digging into it. Pull the recoil off and see if the flywheel moves, even a little bit. Pull the cowlings and tank off. Remove the powerhead from the exhaust housing. If the powerhead frees up, this will tell you it's the lower unit. If the powerhead is still stuck, you'll know the unit isn't the issue. Keep track of the bits on top of the driveshaft - they need to go back on in the same order when reassembling.
