ordered an omc woodriff key off ebay, pretty pricey, for no bigger than it is, but shipping is alot cheaper than msrineengine.com
still trying to find time to put in other parts I ordered, working two jobs sucks!

yes we are zephyr, I just dont understand why unimployment is so high, I could have a third job if there were more hours in the day. I think maybe most of the unimployed are just to picky, about te type of work they want to do.

That, and they like the 99 week thing so they can go fishin, or ride the sofa. LOL :D Last fall, I actually worked 3 for a while, but one place went out of business. I have just a couple loans to pay off and I'll get to spend more time with my toys. :D

As far as parts for that old gem you're working on, a lot of stuff is available at your local OMC marine supply, such as the flywheel key, ignition components, carb kits and impellers. A lot of things though, you'll have to dig a little harder. Sea-Way Marine has been a great help to me, on my 1941 Johnson, so I know they can help you with your late model Big Twin ;)

Re: Vintage evinrude

decided to stay home from job #2 today. Got the coils, points, condensors installed and the carb kit, sure not very many parts to the carb, almost seems like not enough parts. The Woodriff key for flywheel came in the mail today, i'm getting closer to seeing if this thing will run!

Re: Vintage evinrude

does anyone know how much lower unit oil, goes in a 1956 evinrude big twin 30hp, I bought 16 oz. and that was not enough, my service manual does not say.

Re: Vintage evinrude

This is my first boat and I know nothing other then I really want to be on the lake in a cool looking older (vintage) boat. I have a 14 ft.1961 Glasspar with a 35 horse Evinrude. I was really excited when I got it from the original owner. I waited till summer came here in Montana cuz the glacier runoff make the water here friggin cold. So i put it in the water and it ran great until i put it in gear . It would bog down and almost die. I tries to figuree it out but had to load it back up and sit it in my drive way. I could use some direction fellas as our summers here are about three monnths and we are back to freezing over:

use the dark blue box above the forums that says Post New Thread...include year and model no. of your engine if you know them..post the model no. and you can get some help determining the year...you'll get some replies

It's alive!!!!!!:D Fired up the motor for the first time today. It seems to idle a little fast, when I throttle it down to far it wants to die. Guess I will have to put it in the lake and do some more adjusting, to see how low it will go. I am going to try and attach a video, if I can figure out how to do it.

Re: Vintage evinrude

well, I did some more work on the motor, added a fuel pump. All was great, until the fly wheel nut loosened itself off, during the test run! I had it tightened to spec. Looking at the parts manual, does not show the use of a lock washer, I am thinking of adding one to help hold the nut,........ any thoughts? In the meantime I am waiting on a new flywheel key to be delivered from crowley marine, the only place I could find them, and for a small peice of metal, they are not cheap. I dont want to have to keep buying them, lol.

Re: Vintage evinrude

Splashed the evirude today. My wife and I took the boat over to lake today to see how it would run out and do some final adjustments.

The motor seems to run great after fine tuning the carb. idles real well and makes good RPM's, but..... it seems to be overreving alot, I am thinking it is trying to cavitate. Too short a shaft for the boat? and the boat won't plane out. It also has a stutter about every minute or so, like it is trying to jump out of forward gear, but I held the shifter in forward at the motor, while she drove and I could not feel it trying to kick out. It could be the motor stumbling, but it seems to run at high RPM's almost to the point of sounding like it is over revving. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Vintage evinrude

Looks too short to me....I would think you would have a cavitation issue.

Re: Vintage evinrude

I agree. Looks like the cavitation plate should be a couple inches lower. You may want to convert it to a longshaft. The conversion is pretty simple, but does require a few new parts, but they shouldn't be too hard to find. You could do surgery on the transom to lower the motor I suppose, but that's could turn into a can of worms real quick.

Re: Vintage evinrude

Ok, other than the shaft being to short.

It is trying to jump out of forward gear, when going any speed above idle.

I have disassembled lower unit and see a small amount of wear on forward gear, where clutch dog engages, slightly rounded on edge.

The reverse gear does not show signs of wear.

On looking at parts manual, both gears are the same part number, with different bushings for forward and reverse.

My question is has anyone ever switched the gears, putting the reverse gear as forward, and forward as reverse? From what I can see in the parts manual, I would only need to press out the brass bushings and switch them to the other gear. That would put the gear with less wear, in the forward position where 90% of the usage is. Your thoughts would be appreaciated.

Re: Vintage evinrude

Ok, so I took the boat to lake today, after swapping gears, as mentioned in earlier post, and flipping clutch dog, end for end. I also added a hydrofoil fin to cavitation plate. Motor runs out 100% better than it did. No trying to jump out of gear, and no longer cavitates. I Know the motor shaft is too short for the boat it is on, but until I can find a good, aluminum fishing boat to put it on, it will have to do. the motor is setting deep enough to pump plenty of water.

Now I just need to get up enough courage and confidence in the motor to venture further from the ramp, lol.

I hate paddling, though I haven't had to yet.
