Once upon a time oh, say a few days ago.......
A guy emailed me, wants to trade his 1957 14' Sea Scamp wooden boat for my 1980 Silver Line cuddy.
I got a THING for old wooden boats.
His look good/GREAT in pics, I haven't seen it yet, so this may not even be anything....
It's presently has a 9.9 Evinrude new(er) outboard hanging off the back.
I'd like to go with something a bit bigger and @ the same age as the boat.
There is a 1955 30 HP 'Rude fer sale close to me.
Add says it's complete, good compression, runs..............
I looked on line and I see listing for parts, but I'm asking.............
Are all the wear parts, gaskets pretty much available for a older O.B. like this???????/
I'd hate to have a old boat with a modern O.D hanging off the back.

I'm a sucker for a good project!

In my experience '57 and after are pretty easy to find. On the '55 most things will be available, lower unit seals are a little harder to find. Tiller handles, cowlings, things like that are out there but may get a little pricey.

I would bet that the boat will cost a whole lot more to fix up and maintain then a "55 motor.

In the pics, the boat looks like it's perfect, needs a good skipper and that's all.
Orginal paint, clean varnish. The owner states the prop on the 9.9 and lower unit is black, 0 scratches!
Was in the garage when he bought the house a estate sale.
No titiles but has a bill of sale , I have a title from a old trailer.
He coming this weekend to look at mine, then I'm gonna follow him to his.
The '55 motor on Craigslist looks OK, but I've found from doing old motorcycles over, once the motor gets in use, seals go, oil leaks out, air leaks in, impellars break, fuel pump go dumb, the list goes on and on......
Would this be in the years where water would enter the lower unit, (ala British Sea Gulls)? or are they water tight?
I see I can get a manual for that motor also.

There is no such thing as a 1955 30hp. They were 25hp. 30hp was a one-year motor, 1956. SOME, but not all, 1955 25hp motors had a crankshaft seal problem that if it went bad, destroyed the powered. Would need the model & serial number to see if it was one of the affected ones. 1956 30hp was ok in that respect.

Like anything else, condition is everything.

Well, I guess it's all mute now.
Guy called me , doesn't want mine for his, (too many boats in the yard)? (he has 3? trade with me, he still has 3)??
So thanks to all that replied! :)
Each time I learn more and more about these "holes in the water where you toss $$"!

Best part about being a "project junkie" is that when one falls through, there is ALWAYS another one right @ the corner!
