I'm trying to ID this vintage outboard has "Sears" in script on the pull cord wheel which is ontop of the aluminum fuel tank. Numbers on the carb "401-14833". I would post a pic but dont know how to reduce pixels, could use help there too.

A number of companies built motors for sears.Unfortunately many of the older ones had aluminum tanks.
No other numbers on the flywheel, mounting bracket or crankcase?
I don't have a clue about pictures but keep in mind when looking for solutions on your computer right click is your friend.

Here is a quick trick I use for sizing pictures,
right click on the offending picture tell it to send to e-mail it should then give you a list of sizes, I use 800x600 for posting, let the non addressed e-mail pop up and then open the attached pic and make a copy on your desktop...you now have a 800x600 copy.

I have some freeware called "picture resize" but I'm usally caught needing a quick fix

it's mostly a buyers market, most are givin away but you see the occasional criags list add for 75- $100, you can search ebay and if you a member and signed in you can look at previous sales,. That model Sears Elgin was a good sold motor.

I have one of those, all tuned up and ready to go, and with a new pump vane. I offered it for sale for $95 at an antique outboard club meet, with no takers.

Question that's been bothering me! I've noticed a dislike for the aluminum top mounted gas tanks on smaller motors. Why is aluminum frowned on? I have a few older small motors; some with steel and some with aluminum. I thought the aluminum was an advantage since it didn't rust / rust through and was easy to clean up.

Hm.m.m.m, I wonder who is frowning on them?? Outside of the denting, they are fine and don't rust. Well back in the WWII era, some of them were paper thin.
