Vinyl.....Is there a differance?

Was redoing a accent piece in the boat. The backing wood had gone to @#%%, so I recut it and seal it and put some paint on it. Now came the time to put the vinyl back on. The wife went down to the local sewing shop and picked up some "vinyl" that half way match the color in the boat. It was kinda thin. Well thiner than what was in there to start with. It also felt different. It also had like tiny pin holes in too. Soooooooo the ? is.....is there a difference in vinyl? Should I have picked up some Marine vinyl...if that's made?

Hey Hump...yes there is a difference. Basically its thicker, more UV resistant and has mildew or antifungal additives. Regular vinyl will not last very long in marine environment.

Thanks for that info....That will make me only have to do over just one piece. AND its just a small one at that.
I will check out that site for what I need.
Now when it comes to cutting and stapling.....that's another story...:lol:

What kind of stapler....air or hand? or electric? AND......size of staples? I was using 3/8" staples with a hand held but was having trouble with the staples not setting properly.

Corjen1.....I looked at that one when I pick up the manual hand held. Heck, it wasn't $10 more, But I already had the one that shoots the 5/8's staples ( which is to big for the board that I was using) and finishing nails. I may take it back and get that one. The manual doesn't want to set the staples.... and they are only 3/8. Sometimes I can pull the staple back out with my fingers. Just smashes it against the board.

Scott......I'll look at work....I think we have one that shoots T-50's. I may try it also.

I told the wife about the "Marine Vinyl" and the prices and she said that was some good prices for that kind of material.

If you ever use a pneumatic stapler, or any other type pneumatic gun, you will never ever use an electric or hand stapler again. There is no reason to rehammer the staples in or any hand fatigue either. Just pull the trigger and move on... And I too use stainless steel staples as well... It works so quickly and perfectly. You got to try one! JMHO!

TrimJobber's prices are good due to the fact that he deals with factory OverRuns etc... Therefore you May NOT be able to get the same vinyl the second time around sooooo make sure and order what you need the first time. If you're "In the Business" this can be a problem, but for the DIY'r like most of us that do this on a One time basis, his prices are Great and the Products are the same as the Big Time distributors. NOTE: Sometimes his Prices are NOT as good as the Big Boys soooo check around. He does sell the Top of the Line stuff too ($25.00 per yard vinyl) and you can find it other places a bit cheaper at times. I will say his shipping is fast, dependable and priced fairly. Never had any issues at all. He sells all the accessories as well. Great customer service. My vinyl was the cheap closeout Marine vinyl @ $5.95 per yard and It's 3 yrs old and still looks NEW!!!. No complaints from me!!!! I've since used the Tortuga Vinyl on several projects and It's really good stuff and it' only $8.99 a yd.

If you are doing anything that needs welting, I try to pick a product that you can get pre-made welting for.

..............In knitting, welting is the horizontal analog of ribbing; that is, one or more horizontal rows of knit stitches alternating with one or more rows of purl stitches. The simplest welting is garter stitch, in which knit rows alternate with purl rows. Had to look that up. Didn't know what that was.

It's also called Piping. Since I'm A C.O.B. I usually order an extra yard of vinyl and make my own. 1 yd of material will make about 25 yds of piping. It's easy/fast to make using either a cording foot or zipper foot on your machine and a lot cheaper to make than it is to buy. I use 3/16" vinyl Screen door spline for the inner cord to wrap the vinyl around. It just depends if you want to take the time to make it or spend the money to buy it. Some people say TIME IS MONEY and In some cases it is!!!!

I asked them for their opinion in an email and bought what they recommended. However, even at $9/yd it's not as durable as I'd like. It's not paper thin, but it's not premium marine grade either, although labeled as such. I'm hoping to get 3-5 years out of it, hopefully. If I have to redo everything I'm getting samples first.

You want to get at least 30 oz vinyl. The ebay guy says some of is is that weight but I would double check with the manufacturer of what he is selling.

I usually buy any of my vinyl from a wholesaler where I buy my Sunbrella and their prices are way better than that eBay guy.

Durability?? Marine Grade? Which Brand did you purchase and what issues are you having? Like I said, I got the Close out $5.95 stuff and had it 3 years and it's not showing any issues at all. Heck I used a 6 SPI Morse Home Machine and didn't know what I was doing when I did my original seats and they're still holding up pretty good. Now that I have a Walking Foot sewing 4 SPI with #92 thread its Sooo much better.
