I use Purple Power. Make sure you wear gloves.

I think he meant X-14. We open the bottle and pour it into a bucket. Then take a regular house hold sponge (wear gloves if you have sensitive hands), wring it out, and wipe it on. Rinse it very well with water as soon as the stains disappear. Depending on what material was used for stitching, it can go after it...

BTW, I have tried just about everything: magic erasers, marine mildew removers, etc.. Nothing came even close to working as well as the X-14...

You don't have to buy anything just put some Clorox or equivalent in with the soapy water. It is the clorene that kill sthe mildew/mold. Rinse thoroughly as bjsc recommends.

Yep, it is. It's chlorine. It'll turn your hair blond in the swimming pool and turn your stomach lining white from your city drinking water. Heh, heh. OK, so it's all in the mixing ratio. Too strong and it'll eat your hide off and at the right proportion it is used to purify drinking water. Use common sense and as the disclaimer says, "test in an inconspicous spot".

Just wondering about bleach, will it mess up the stitching at all over a short period of time?

Re: Vinyl -Mildew Remover

what is X-14?
sodium hypochlorite 3-6%
sodium carbonate 0.5-2% (Arm & Hammer washing soda)

what is regular clorox bleach?
sodium hypochlorite 6.15%
sodium hydroxide less than 1%

For the price, it would be way cheaper to buy some washing soda and add it to a bottle of bleach.

We use several different cleaners in our dealership detail shop and no one cleaner works on every stain. If I had to pick the best of the purchased products if would hands down be a product called Boat Armour mildew stain remover. This product does have the chlorine base in it , but it also has several other vinyl and restorer type chemicals mixed in at the best known proportions.

I used Clorox for years, nothing beats good old bleach for removing mold. BUT, it does deteriorate the stiching and harden the vinyl over time. Leave a common washcloth in a bucket of bleach blend for while and see what happens. I only use commercial vinyl cleaners now. 3M Vinyl Cleaner and Restorer.

I tried alot of stuff for vinyl..I'd have to say X-14 is awesome and amazed how well it works..No scrubbing, just spray and come back 10 mins later.. I spray a little of the carpet by accident and it didn't even bleach it.. So i went nuts and sprayed everything.. Hand rails, seats, vinyl backings and it looks brand new.. But make sure you get vinyl protector and apply it after..

Already mentioned...rinse, rinse and rinse again no matter which cleaner you use!

I also use Meguir's Marine Vinyl cleaner & protection regularly through season. It won't do much to mildew but will clean normal dirt and leave vinyl well protected. Another good one is 303 protector.

Go to Wallyworld and check out the Attwood line. The boat cleaning products are great. They're also inexpensive. The spray bottle of "Black Streak Remover" works great on mold. Using the base chemicals in cleaning products is WAY cheaper, but you've got to be really careful with the ratios. Too much or too little of any chemical can be destructive, dangerous, and could even kill or leave you miserable for the rest of your life due to lung damage. I'm not trying to scare you, just be careful if you go that route. I've used several of the Attwood cleaning products, and they're fantastic.

Happy and safe boating always!!!
