All computer gurus.
To make a long story short, my computer got infected with the trojan.win32.startpage.adh virus   . I looked in google search page for help and don't seems to find anything on it. Do any of you know of a freeware program that can remove this pesky hijack virus.

Re: Virus removal

Do you have an anti-virus program running now, that found the virus and can't remove it? If so, did it say why? If you have the anti-virus program, try running it in safe mode and see if it will get rid of it. What operating system are you running, win98, Win2000, XP?

If you dodn't have an anti-virus, you could download AVG free edition or Computer Associates have a free one year AV that you can download. You must NOT run two anti-virus programs at the same time. I know of several others that may help also, let me know!

You could go to Norton Anti-Virus at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/global/index.html
and click on VIEW ALL REMOVAL TOOLS, then find the free virus removal tool for your virus.
I started using AVG free version after several IBoats members recommended it and I'm totally satisfied with it's performance. Good luck

I have symantec antivirus running and it did say that the virus was quarantine. I found out that this virus is a trojan and even I restore to an earlier time it is still there. BTW, I am running winXP. I will check all link given and will report back as to how I get rid of this d**n trojan.

Noelm, what is the name of the hat with cork hanging from it. My daughter have to do a play and doesn't know what sort costume the austrialian wear. I thought about this and also the billybong.

beezee28.........

You might want to run a free virus scan and a spyware/adware scan. I have been using their poduct's for several years and I really like it.

www.trendmicro.com/home/default.asp

Look on the lower left side of the home page, under the popular resources

I use three different programs in my computer, for both type of problems. It might be an over kill, but my VAIO has never gotten "sick."

...Bob in Calif...

Beezee ,Not too sure if the hat with the corks really has a specific name (do not know anyone who wears one though) it is just an Aussie icon and a billabong is just a small lake, usually in the more tropical areas of Aus.

beezee ,just did a 'google" and could not find a name for them so I guess they are just "hats with corks to keep the flies away" still never seen anyone wear one.

It's called a 'Swagmans Hat', or 'Swaggy's Hat'. My dad does some seasonal raspberry/blueberry picking, in summer, he wears one everyday.

If you are looking for a hat that more typically represents aussies, google 'Akubra'. They are far more popular.

Aldo, I did that and there are a zillion models shown.

akubra.com.au/products_country.html (that ok jb? :D )

Which model is the quintessential Australian model? Many have that Australian look but some look like American riverboat gambler hats and some look like American cowboy Stetson hats.

Yep, lots of different models, just like us! :)

This one is very popular, made from kangaroo hide but buffalo or cow is just as popular.

If symantec has the trojan in quartanine, then just delete the trojan out of there. The problem you have is that more than likely, the trojan is also still in your restore points, and symantec can't delete it from there. You need to delete all the restore points.

Re: Virus removal

Try re-starting the PC in safe mode and running the norton again. I believe safe mode is f5 at boot. just keep pressing it until it gives you the option to boot to safe mode. Also.. make sure your definitions are up to date first. like VIP said, disable restores first..

Re: Virus removal

OK, here is the latest update on the virus on my computer. I downloaded spybot S&D and ran that through and it found some file that was written by the trojan.win32.startpage. Clean that out and then I went online and downloaded ad-aware and did the same thing. All these was done without connection to the web so that I do not get more unwanted entires during cleanup. I then undo system restore and ran symantec corp edi antivirus once again and this time it found a trojan.zlob.l and clean it out. Update virus definition and rescan the computer (complete file and all hard drive). Reinstall system restore and now the computer looks healthy.

while doing all this the power supply decided to die on me and have to go and get a new power supply unit. At first I thought that the virus finally took over the whole system and shut down on me but ater further investigation, I smelled something like rubber buring and it was coming from the power supply unit.

Thank you all for your help and guidance.
