Volt meter hook up?

I recently purchased a small fishing boat with a 1992 50hp mercury remote steering and I am wondering how to hook up the volt meter that is already in the dash but does not work. There is no switched wires up under the dash and the only one that I found is coming out of the throttle assembly as and extra pig tail. The wire is purple in color and my question is can I hook the meter up to this wire without any damage to something in the throttle assembly. Thanks

To clarify. The purple wire coming from the control is to power your gauges and accessories that require power from ingnition switch. They grey wire that is there also is the send wire for the tach. Tan and rta/blue are for temperature gauge and warning horn.

Rick, can I purchase the plug in for the pig tail coming out of the control box? If so what is it called and would you happen to have a part# handy? Thanks
