Re: Voltage and charging

Ok I had my wife figure out how to post an attachment for me. Please stop laughing lol. However it is good to know that I was in the right area. And yes this is the 70 hp Evinrude. I no longer own the mercs. If I can take more pictures I will upload

Re: Voltage and charging

I've had my batteries tested, all good. I've cleaned up all the connections, hooked up new cables from motor directly to battery bypassing the switch, and same thing. Slow turn over. I've taken the starter off Nd put thenegative of my battery charger on the casing andclamped onto the positive. It roared toile, spinning fast and strong.. So batteries tested good, cables all do the same thing as the brand new ones. I don't k ow how to test the solnoid and am thinking of pulling the battery from my truck to see if maybe the guy at the battery place was o correct. Other than that I'm at my white end, time to put it all back together again. And call it a day for this project and move on to simpler ones.
Thanks guys for all the advice and help but sometimes you gotto bite the bullet I guess and rake it to a boat doctor. Who's already fixed a similar problem. Or just get back to it in a few days.

...I've taken the starter off and put the Negative of my battery charger on the casing and clamped onto the positive. It roared to life, spinning fast and strong...

This means almost nothing. There was No LOAD on the starter!

Put everything back together.

For each of these measurements, crank the engine starter for a few seconds.
The Meters Negative Probe stays on the Battery NEG POST.

1. Voltage at Battery POS Post. _____ v
2. Voltage at Switch Batt terminal. _____ v
3. Voltage at the Switch Load Terminal. _____ v
4. Voltage at the starter POS Terminal. _____ v

The voltages need to be measured during engine cranking (Loaded)
Remove the Coil Lead to prevent the engine from starting.

Re: Voltage and charging

Well. As I was putting this gs back together I paid special close attention to sanding and greasing every connector, every nut, noticing I had missed some small ground wires. I referred to pictures I'd taken to reconnect the solnoid (almost put it together backwards). I still had the switch bypassed and turned the key expecting the same, and it turned over full power. With new enthusiasm and excitement I hooked the batteries up to the switch following a diagram I found on another thread. Both positions turned over.
So every connection means EVERY connection. I was concentrating on just the cables, batteries, and switch.
Just want to say thank you guys. I've learned a lot. , now to hook up my fish finder, and my bulge, wish me luck.

Re: Voltage and charging

The ground from the sol old to the block I had completely missed and I did not clean the block just the cable end of the main ground wire. So when putting everything back together I took off the main, re cleaned it and cleaned the block as well. Vro ground too, not sure if it needed it buts that's a other story.

Oh and yeah I ended up breaking my meter. Pushing too hard I broke the negative lead. Lol.

Re: Voltage and charging

Well I'm back boys. Was out of the water and all of a sudden no start as I was fishing drifting into shore. I got it home and it was doing the same thing. Replaced the solnoid, cleaned the ends ect ect. Come back to the thread to see if there was something I missed.
If this is just simple connection problems how can I avoid this.
P's not fun starting a boat with cowling off in 5 foot swells. Salvaging part of the anchor rope cause you don't have a rip chord.

Re: Voltage and charging

If you go through the various connections with your voltmeter while hitting the key then you you will find the fault.
That's way better than taking the shotgun approach and cleaning everything in sight.

Re: Voltage and charging

Thanks fed. Ground cable on the block. I have it secured with a nylon lock nit, but I guess I'm going to need something else to stop it from vibrating lose. I'm thinking lock washer under the nylon lock nut? And a commonly used tool kit on the boat.
