Hello, Got the starter problems fixed for now. Cleaned up the old one, and ordered a new one.

Now I got the boat started up this morning, and checked the voltage at the battery, and it was jumping all over the place. It would go from 12.7v to 2v to 7v to 0.3v and back up to 12.7v. This was with the engine at idle. I reved it up a bit, and it was about the same numbers.

I noticed the two wires from the stator were corroded, so I cleaned them up as best I could, and clipped them about 3/4" from where they attach to the stator, and used new wire the rest of the way. So I'm not sure if I'm getting any charge from that at all.

Thanks for any help.

Check all your wiring around the motor and external harness at plug and ignition key switch. Look for loose wires bad, bad connections, and broken or missing insulation.

OH, and the most important thing. Make sure your battery cable connections are clean and TIGHT. No broken insulation are cracked insulation on those either.

is this on your inline 6?

your stator may be shot or your rectifier could be no the brink or could have loose connections.

But before you commit harey carey, turn the engine off and see if the volage stabilizes. Probably a digital voltmeter and they are sensitive to spark plug firings. Back when you could still get them, I had an analog for making measurements with engines running.

If you are reading at your batteries, there's no way your battery voltage can go from 12v to 2v instantaneously. If it does, you'd better run and run fast, because your battery IS BLOWING UP!

What will help is to go to Radio Shack and get a .01 microfarad or thereabouts (not critical)CERAMIC (type is critical) capacitor and attach it directly across the meters leads right at your voltmeter. Keep the leads of the capacitor as short as possible. This cap will short out most ignition noises picked up on the leads and allow you to read your meter with the engine running.

Mark

Thanks, I did some searching on here, and found the rectifier that is recommended from radio shack. Put that in, and problem was solved. The batteries are also charging now. All systems go!!

Had the boat out both days this weekend. worked great. no starting problems. no charging problems. actually, No problems at all. Just fun and fishing. thats the way it should be.

Thanks for all the help, both from people posting, and from the search.

Nate.
