Voltage issue........

I just purchased a 1999 Sea Ray Sundeck with a 5.0 Mercruiser. Its runs great but the ammeter is pegged as long as the engine runs. Any ideas on where I should start. If I understand correctly the voltage regulator is part of the alternator. Can I have this bench tested at the auto parts store? thanks.........

Re: Voltage issue........

I assume you mean the VOLT meter, not amp meter.
With the engine running, hook up your DVM to the battery terminals, and then the battery cable ends at the battery and see what it's showing (report both voltages). Also test at the orange wire terminal on the back of the alternator. (+ lead of meter on terminal, - lead on good clean ground)

Re: Voltage issue........

Well.....I checked the voltage at the alternator and its 14.9......the guage is still pegged at 16+ volts.....I took the alternator, and had it checked and the shop said it was normal at 14.9, I'm assuming if the amps drop the voltage is okay(though I haven't been able to round up an ammeter).....any reason my guage would still read 16? I'm not good with electrical issues and appreciate the help?
