I need to buy a voltage regulator for my 87 Mercury 200hp but when looking at the parts section of this website there are so many. My serial number is OB184641. Which one will be the best one for my engine? I'm charging 18 volts at about 1500 rpm. Also, I have read on CDI's website that I shouldn't use a maintenance free battery which I have. What's wrong with a maintenance free battery? Which battery am I going to have to buy? Thanks for any info.

Looking at the merc schematic, you have the separated rectifier and regulator setup, yes? If so and at 18 volts DC charging at the batt, sounds like just the regulator is bad, yes?

So aside from that, some good news for you but, bad for capitalism!!....Whimper

You can replace both the separated devices(rec and reg) from the back in the day design that are selling out there for around $180 and $50 respectively w just one device...Some are selling the one piece devices(rec/reg) as "kit"(comes w nuts, bolts and a mounting plate? and justifying jacking the price off the charts)replacements for the two pieces.....This is what those other guys are/have been doing now for 3/4 times the price...... but I'm sure you can come up with something w the extra $$$$ you'll save eh?

Amazon.com: Rectifier / Regulator Mercury Mariner Outboard 12 Volt 6 Wire NEW: Automotive

These rec/regs are spot on.....line and load regulations are well within factory specs/tolerances(rock solid Vout across their spec'd load spectra)perhaps even tighter, they run cool(efficient) are designed w current technology/components, they are warranted for 1 year and are receiving 5 star ratings.

Running mine[two in parallel (in remote sensed mode, best charge for your buck)] now for 2nd yr, no problems yet and now running a 3 batt system(2 deeps, 1 start).

I use/fish my boat almost daily for around 4 months per season and have never used a on-board charger(non installed, nor do I want one installed) while moored in those months.....I run 2 lectric downrigger, livewell, fishwell, washdown, fishfinder, radio, running/nav lights and the occasional inverter for Icees?., all standard stuff.

But, if you just what the separate pieces still

Thanks for the great info. You said that you are running two in patallel and it sounds like you have quite an electrical system. I looked at the one review of the regulator on ebay and this guy says he is running two as well and that his motor calls for two. He has a 175hp. Do I need two as well or is one enough? I just have a 20 ski boat with a stereo (no big amp), a fish finder and the usual guage set up. Nothing fancy. Thanks. I'm going to go this route. I like to save some $$$$ where I can and Mercury OEM parts are so darn expensive. They are really proud of their parts.

Re: voltage regulator for 1987 blackmax 200

You're very welcome,

That depends on your stator/setup. I think you have the 16 Amp stator so I think you only have one set of yellow wires to run just one rec/reg. The setups(mine anyway) that run two rec/reg's in parallel have a different stators(another set of winding's in the stator that run 180 degrees out of phase) than your setup that have two sets of yellow wires to accommodate the two in parallel. I think you can convert/install the higher amp stator thou.........maybe have to do some research on that.

You dont want a maintenance free battery if you keep that stock charging system. Flooded cells are the "correct" battery for the non regulated systems. They used all sorts of charging systems in those things in the late 80's and early 90's. It was when Mercury was transitioning to the 40 amp system and they tried a few flops. The regulators on a 40 amp system are not really run in parallel per se'. They are more like two completely separate charging systems off a common stator. In any case that single $49 regulator is what you want. Just run one with a 16 amp stator and your voltage will stabilize at 14 ish. Then you can use whatever battery you want.

It appears from the schematic, his stock system is/was regulated, it just uses a separate regulator....... Functionally identical to the one pcs units.

Awesome. Thanks everyone. I think I've told you this on another thread Wired but that really is nice looking boat. Looks like a real screamer. Is that a 250hp?

Your system does use a separate voltage regulator and rectifier. The regulators are terrible on those and are know to crap out with the wrong look. The late model integral style are much better and rarely die.

I burned up a piston in mine a couple of weeks ago at 88 MPH running too lean when the Brucato ECU crapped out. Damnit. I sent that block back in to Chris Carson for a new sleeve . Its going to be my spare. I'm putting together a new 225 promax for it this evening. New block and pistons anyway. Even bone stock those are 240 ish HP so with a few small mods 250 is about right. Hard to believe that Mercury still sells new promax blocks for decent prices but they do. Tony sent me a new ECU yesterday so it should be back on the water by Tuesday .

I received my regulator/ rectifier today (the one Sam recommended). How and where do I mount it? It's a lot bigger than the original rectifier and regulator. Doesn't look like there is any room for it. Also, I have 2 red wires connected to the original rectifier and one goes to the original regulator that I am going to remove. What do I connect to the second red wire on the new regulator/ rectifier? There is a red wire going to the starter solenoid. Should that be connected to the new regulator or leave that where it is? Thanks for all your help. This site takes the guess work out for us newbies.

Bolt it to the block anywhere that is handy. The two red wires are for charging the battery and sensing the voltage of the battery. They can both be hooked up to your starter solenoid where the positive terminal is.

Does anyone here have a picture of this installed? I have an '88 200 Blackmax with the same issue. I ordered the same dual rect/erg and waiting for it to ship. Any tips for installing would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.
