I just had a problem with my 1992 90hp Evinrude. Coming back to the dock, everything running well... the tach starts bouncing around but the engine pitch stays constant. It was running about 3/4 throttle, ~4000 rpm. The control center alarm goes off. I kill the engine and a puff of black smoke comes from out of the engine. The electrical system to the engine is dead. No tilt & trim, instrument lights or whistle when I turn the key to on. We had a lot of weeds around the lower unit so I wonder if the water cooled voltage regulator overheated?
A little interesting aside, we towed it to the dock with my buddy's 1953 8hp Evinrude on his alumacraft fishing boat. Fifty-one years old and it runs great. Then I tried to manually lift up the engine before putting it on the trailer. It wouldn't budge. After a little loooking around I found a little screw labeled 'manual release'. I opened it and was then able to lift up the motor for loading and transport. I bought this boat and motor second hand with no manuals so....
I need to find the Evinrude shop manual and parts list for this motor. I'd like to find the factory publications. Any suggestions?
