Volvo 270 shredded impellers?

Don,

I enjoyed your article on summerization. I have a '74 Glasstron/Volvo with a 302 Ford. It has a fresh water pump with a rubber impeller.

One time I started it up and it shredded the impeller, probably locking up dry. There seems to be a brief period where there is no water to lubricate the rubber until it catches primer. Can you suggest some way to keep this from happening either on winterization or summerization?

It's not usually a problem. Make sure there is plenty of water pressure to the muffs, and be sure to plug the round secondary water pickup hole in the bottom of the drive.
