Volvo 275 retaining pawl wont release - sometimes

Hey everyone - hope you are all just about ready for the '22 season. I've run into a small prob with my Volvo 275 outdrive which i should have spent more time resolving over the winter but totally forgot. The outdrive retaining hook/catch which holds the outdrive down when in reverse has a habit of a) Not holding down in reverse, so the drive lifts up out of the water when docking, and b) doesn't want to release to let the drive come up (say if you hit something submerged) I've got it in the driveway and the drive is locked whether its in F/N/R

Last season the issue in reverse was intermittent so I'm figuring something is out of adjustment. Should the lift/tilt ram be touching the top of the rod that pokes up from the retainer mechanism? Should it be free to lift up in F and N and locked in place in R?
The drive tilts up and down OK using the lift/tilt. Everything is clean and free to move. Not sure whats up with this. Any pointers would be very welcome.

The button should be sticking higher than it appears. It is threaded onto the rod. It could be possible that the rod is bent. With a pair of offset needle nose pliers it is possible to unscrew it to make it closer to the foot of the ram.
be sure that the coil springs on the locking pawl are not broken and the moving parts are free.
Get a genuine Volvo service manual.

Thanks - i got the book for it. The sections for setting this up are a bit confusing though, its kind of a confusing mechanism compared to my old outboard..

the outdrive should always be held in place by the pawls. it is supposed to release if you hit something if you are going forward, and it is supposed to lock when in reverse. the pic you posted looks ok to me, when I bought mine, the sleeve that screws to the top of the rod was ruined. I wouldn't want the sleeve adjusted too high ,as may bind or bend in the hole it slides in. as long as the pawls are being released in reverse, there is no reason to adjust it higher, imo.
it sounds like it's working ok. I've read that the pawls can get worn and not hold as well, or perhaps the springs are not holding. the locking in reverse part is pretty much unnecessary imo, but you can look to see it that part is working as well.
good luck.

After a closer look, and more time figuring out the outdrive manual I found spring (#57) broken. I just bought and installed the spring and everything looks fine, its still not releasing when forward is engaged though. Is this right? Maybe i'm not pulling hard enough for it to disengage? I cant really get at the nut on the sleeve too well but doesn't that rod assembly just serve to disengage the pawl when you lift the drive using the mechanical lift? Maybe I'm missing something here.pawl.png

Hello,

I just bought a boat that I want to refurbish and I'm looking for the service manual for the outdrive 275. Where can I download it?
Thank you
