I have a volvo 280 leg on my boat.
When I try to trim it up, the motor hums but the leg does not go up.
If you lift up on the leg and give it a helping hand it will go up.
When it is up, I can push it back down if I put the weight of my body on it.
As I look at the trim motor, I see there is no fluid reservoir.
The motor mounts on the side of a shaft of some sort.
There is a black plastic box on the top of the shaft with wires coming out.
I have the manual for a 280 leg and it looks nothing like what I have.
Picture wise this looks like the 280 leg, but I am beginning to wonder.
I was told by the previous owner it was a 280 leg.
There is a number on a tag on top of the leg.
The number is 280068.

Any ideas?

The 280 does not have trim, only the electro mechaical lift motor to raise the drive for trailering. The force of the prop pushes the drive back down.

Re: Volvo 280 leg trim problems.

Thank you.
I probably would have spent hours and tons of money trying to fix it.
When there was nothing to fix.
Although it should probably go up by itself.
I don't mind helping it up.

The only way to adjust trim on my 280 is the latch rod at the bottom. I used to use loop a line around it to haul it up before I replaced the motor. My local friendly boat shoppe wanted, excuse me, got $250 for it. It has worked flawlessly since.

Re: Volvo 280 leg trim problems.

i had a problem with my tilt system on my 275 about a month ago. it would not go up or down, however the motor would make noise just fine. i originally thought it was the spring and i tried stiffening it up with an extra washer as was recommened in the volvo manual and that didn't work.

next i took out off the motor and i noticed that there was supposed to be a roll pin coming through the shaft extending out of the starter motor. i cleaned out the remains and put in a new roll pin. 30 cents later, our drive goes up and down.
