I just bought a used boat, and it has a 280 out drive, after testing it out, and the question comes to mind, is this outdrive strong enough tilted for trailering, or shound I get a bracket, I checked the volvo website, but could find any info, the boat is a Bayliner 19 foot bowrider and the engine is a AQ225D, everything runs great, now for a few questions; this boat has points, is there a drop in electronic dist. that has the same volvo advance curve curve, and after reading some posts here about the oil, I'm under the inpression that I should use 30w oil, what about 30wHD, I understand the HD stands fo High Detergant? or Heavy duty?, anybody knows, last but really inportant, Serloc or Clymer manual?

Yes, get a trailering bracket or tie the drive up. They do bounce down on a trailer and will drag the ground.

Volvo went from points to the Prestolite distibutor on their engines. I converted mine to the Prestolite also.
http://marineengineparts.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page82.html

Regarding your oil. This is from Volvo.

Re: Volvo 280 outdrive - Trailering

Thanks Don;
A couple of quick questions, on the oil filter, is there any differances between OEM products, or let's say Fram, I know that the GM sm. block, had many types of filter apps/listings.,but the common listings found in WallyWorld, seem pretty appealing price wise, and since I have a 350 in the tow truck, I could get the stuff all at once.
I noticed that there was a little canister type fuel filter on the left side of the motor, my question is, is there a little filter on the carb. inlet connection, seems that this has a quadajet setup, and I know on cars/trucks they have a little screen/filter in that assembly.
I ordered the gaskets for the outdrive drain plug, fill plug, dipstick, as I found that they were brittle.

Re: Volvo 280 outdrive - Trailering

Working at both a Volvo and a Mercruiser dealership, we use Volvo filters on Volvo's and Merc filters on Merc. and I really don't know of many people that actually test filters side by side to see which works best. Since which filter to use is more of a Ford vs. Chevy type question, about all you ever get is "I use ______ brand, and have no problems" but in most cases even the worst filter would be ok if the oil is changed often enough.
Here is a link to an oil filter study that may help in your decesion.
Oil Filter Study

There is a small screen type filter in your carb, but the engine filter should clean anything out of the fuel before it gets to the carb.
The bad thing about the filter on the "Starboard" side of your engine, is it's NOT a water seperating fuel filter, only a particulate filter.
Many just add an aftermarket waterseperating fuel filter between the tank and fuel pump. The filters are spin on, and look similar to an oil filter.

Don;
Here's a dumb question, I'm assuming one would put the water seperater before the fuel filters?
P.S. Thanks for the info

It's one filters that does 2 jobs.
The filter element paper doesn't allow water to pass, only gas. This only works to a point, and if you have nothing but water or mostly water in the filter, it will pass water to the carb.

Don:
How about your thought's about the Bosch spark pluge with the multi- electrode tips, since I have a older motor, with good compression, My thought is having a larger spark kernal would be benificial ( this thought was from a so called engine expert ... next door neighbor1 )

Re: Volvo 280 outdrive - Trailering

Spark plugs are chosen by the manufacturer of the engine to give a clean controlled burn of the fuel when firing. Not just a big BANG from a lot of spark. That's what causes engine damage.
Stick with the proper plugs for your marine engine. Hot rod your car engine.

There is a plug on either side of the block, and drains on the exhaust manifolds. Drain the hoses and raw water pump.

Re: Volvo 280 outdrive - Trailering

Don;
I received the manuals for the motor & outdrive along with the parts, and amoung the parts was the trailer bracket ( looks like a large u- shaped,make out of 1/4" thick bar stock ) , after a quick review of the outdrive manual, it's not clear where you lower the drive to, I'm assuming one lowers the drive so the trailer bracket engages the reverse locking arrangement?
