Ok I have a 1977 Hawaiian 26 foot day cruiser, 351 w and a 280 outdrive, here is my question, does this thing have a power tilt/trim on it or no? can you explain the proper way to raise and lower it in the water please and should I strap it up in the raised position when traveling with it?? I want to thank everybody who answers before hand. Thank you.

I'm no Don S but I'll take a shot.

Some 280s have power trim, most don't. If you do, you'd have a hydraulic pump and if not you have a electric tilt mechanism that looks like this located at the rear of your motor.

http://www.volvopentastore.com/MECHANICAL_LIFT_DEVICE_AQ_DRIVE_UNIT_280_EARLY_TYPE/dm/*******.289243354--**********.603322402--store_id.366--view_id.327380

If you have the electric tilt:
Do not operate the engine with the tilt all the way up. Running or not.
If you must run with the outdrive half way up, only at idle speed and never in reverse. Must be full down for reverse.
If you reverse and the outdrive kicks up, even though it's in the full down position, its not working right and you must fix it.

I strap my drive up to keep pressure off the tilt during trailering and would recommend others do as well.

ahhhh ok, I have to go back out and take another look, if mine has electric tilt would that little plunger looking thing be on the left side (drivers side) sort of inside on the outdrive?? and I should have a toggle switch somewhere on my dash right? thanks for the info capt, im going back out after lunch to take another look:)

Look for the black box on the top of the assembly. should be behind the valve cover on the port side (left side of boat). below the black box would be a small electric motor sitting horizontally. If thats what you find, thats the Electronic tilt.

Ok I think I see that black box unless I have it mistaken for a ignition box of some sort, I went out there and just about melted so Im going to wait till it cools off a bit then examine better. I also noticed the outdrive has a prop rod type thing which is somewhat underneath (and swings) and props into place to hold the drive up??thanks again Capt its much appreciated

The rod you're talking about releases the pawls so the lift motor plunger can push the motor up. I didn't feel comfortable with the stress on the lift assembly and housing while going down the road so I bought one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Volvo-Penta-Trailering-Bracket-270-280-Outdrive_W0QQitemZ250342779682QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBoat_Parts_Accessories_Gear?hash=item3a4997ab22&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1171
Works great but don't see why a strap wouldn't work as well.

Damn im learning something new here every time I check in pretty cool!! ok so let me ask you folks something, when I get ready to launch her in the water ( i havent taken her out yet ) after I figure out what kind of trim my boat has, do I just drop my drive and go? when my drive is all the way in the lowered position should it be tight as opposed to it being able to be lifted up and down by hand?
my other boat had a alpha 1 with power tilt/trim so im not used to this old Hawaiian 280 set up yet.

do I just drop my drive and go?

thats what I do. As long as its deep enough.:)

when my drive is all the way in the lowered position should it be tight as opposed to it being able to be lifted up and down by hand?

It may not be "tight" but it should not lift. The retaining pawl should hold it from raising.

Have a look at this link. There is a link in this thread with the manual for your drivel, download that as well.

Re: Volvo 280 question Mr Don S?? can you help?

Hey goodmorning everyone!!!!! Ok well I figured out that it has the black box electro mechanical lift I think you call it? it connects into the outdrive and on the outside of the boat looking in towards the 280 on the inner part of the 280 its connected to that raise and lower ram piston thing. I only have one toggle switch on my dash but it doesnt say tilt or trip or anything and when I hit it into the down position I can hear a faint click but nothing moves, and it wont raise the outdrive im assuming when its out of the water ???

The wiring harness which goes inside the black box only has 2 wires and one is a ground which is connected and the other is im guessing power b/c it connects to what looks like a 12 volt solenoid bolted to the intake. But, a green wire coming out of the other part of the lift box was tagged with a yellow stick which said something about connecting to flywheel or bellhousing??? it looked like a ground wire has a big circle connection on the end, well, that was just dangling there unhooked, is that a ground wire??
