Volvo 3.0 INconsistantly knocking

Ok So on a few different trips out this season i have noticed a slight knocking sound coming from the engine.. like knock knock knock knock knock knock..u get the point.
So i thought maybe it was really bad like a rod or something but whats wierd is that it does not knock evrytime i start her up.. however if she does knock when started then it will knock the whole time whether idle or cruising.

my nieghbor said maybe a flap??

any opinion is appriciated

Is it from the engine or near the drive? What year is this?

its an '88 wellcraft 170 classic with a volvo 3.0 and alpha 1 o/

I'm not exactly sure now that you mention that.. I mean i'm always captian and it came from back there so i assumed it was the engine.. I'll have to test it out.. but kinda worried about taking her out if its knockin'
