1998 3L volvo penta. runs/starts fine cold but when hot, hard to start, often floods. especially if turned off hot then for left for 1/2 - floods bad. carb has been properly adjusted idle 650-700 in gear etc. have tried seafoam & carb cleaner. How do I fix this? does carb need to be replaced or rebuilt? is it something else?

many thanks

Check to make sure the choke is opening up fully when it's warm.

Re: volvo 3L starting problem when hot

bwood,
My '97 does the same thing. I've found that the best way to start the motor when warm is to advance the throttle, then back to center before turning the key. If it does flood, I open the engine cover and it starts within a minute.

I also suspect that the 10% ethanol may be aggravating this problem. The alcohol might boil away while sitting in a hot carburetor.

My owners manual says to let the motor run 2-3 minutes before turning it off after running hard to cool the motor, otherwise it can be hard to start.

Re: volvo 3L starting problem when hot

Thanks for the replies

the choke plate is opening wide. letting it idle a minute or two before shutting down dooesn't make any difference. The only sure thing is to re-start every 5-10 minutes. if I let it sit hot for any more than 15 minutes - it floods, and is VERY hard to start - even holding throttle wide open. I saw a similar post aug 24 by ezjam - the diagnosis was incorrect float adjustment - tooo high, spilling/leaking fuel into the engine when hot and causing the flooding. advice was to lower float. Could this be my problem as well?

many thanks
