Re: Volvo 5.7GS Coil Burn UP

After spending all morning on line and phone I ordered 2 prestolite coils that are supposed to match my ignition that is made by prestolite also Volvo/OMC Part 3852217 says on coil to be used with external resistor only engine did not come with one. The coils sent in OMC boxs do not have any markings on them except #27310 with number underscore of 0104.

Hope this fixes my Problem

Hope that fixes your problem.

Other things that kill coils is leaving the key in the on position, or another source of full time voltage.

There are different coils for different applications. Generally, Electronic IGN has a coil that will work with 12v supplied at all times while with points type there is a resistor to keep the primary voltage down around 9v. If your losing coils and ign modules, look for damage or shorting in the wiring. Current spikes and shorts and heat take out electrical circuits.

Prestolite Coil fixed problem Note!! Volvo & Cliemer service manuals state that coil must be one with a internal resister. All the coils that I recieved from Dealer had a note on the coil that they required a external resistor. Also none of the coils had any volvo/OMC cross numbers or part#'s on them.
