Stranded in Cabo with no one who knows these engines. Both fuel pumps were non-op after a year in storage so replaced. Fired right up. Idles great and sounds great up to 3300-3400 but with more throttle it just surges and never gains rpm. Yesterday noticed that the temp gauge was non-op. Any connection. Was thinking fuel restriction but cutout point is too exact and when I bleed the fuel bleeders I seem to have lots of fuel. My vacation is going by too quick and I haven't killed a fish yet. I know, "what a whiner". I have some mechanical ability but am lost when it comes to electronics. Any help is mui bueno. Gracias:cool:

Thanks for the replys guys. this is fuel injected and acts this way even out of gear so has nothing to do with outdrive situations or fouled hull. When the engine cuts out it sounds like it is electrical rather than fuel related and "dies" momentarilly and runs back up and "dies" again. Will get engine #s tomorrow and check out the manuals. might be temp switch (not sender) or oil psi switch (not sender)

It could be a hundred different things on an EFI engine. That is why he needs the manual and troubleshoot in a logical manner instead of the ole try this, or it might be this, that, or the other thing approach.

Exactly,
But since you are on vactation and your temp gauge isn't working, you may very well find that is your problem.
Test to figure out if its the gauge or the sender. Because if it is the sender, you may be in reduced power mode.
I don't know whether or not the reduced power mode, (S.L.O.W.)?, will reset, or if it will have to be reset. Volvo guys?

you can dissconnect the wire to temp switch & oil psi switch, one at a time & see if that fixes it.as long as you know it is not overheating & has oil pressure.this is a pretty cheap way to start eliminating problems.pcm has had to go to a different style oil pressure switch .

Re: Volvo 5.8fi goes to 3300rpm and surges

Again, thanks everyone for the help. From what I can find out, the SLOW will reset automatically after cool down. this situation manifests itself at start up while cold. Oil pressure seems fine. Manual says S.L.O.W. due to oil press or temp will allow only 2700 rpm, I get 3300 rpm. Reading the manual indicates that the other "possibles" will require a computer to find the exact problem as some of them are electronic that can't be physically traced. I am still working on it but am running out of options short of the computer route. Ran the boat 4 hours this morning and it never missed a beat below 3300rpm. got out far enough that the Mrs. got 3 good Dorado. BROWNIE POINTS!!! ;)
I welcome any other ideas. Thanks Don for the manual links you sent....really helped me. Monte
