After 20 seasons, its time to replace points on my Volvo AQ 125A engine; I started to do this years ago but dogged off because the boat ran well and I couldn't locate the crankshaft timing mark. I have a service manual but it does not depict the AQ125A pulley, and I do not see any mark on the pulley as I would expect. Is the pulley timing mark the crankshaft keyway, or something else?

Incidentially, the only problem I have encountered with this engine in 20 seasons is erosion of the gasket between the lower parts of the Solex carbeurator. Due to high cost of Volvo parts, I now cut my own and keep a spare on hand.

Re: VOLVO AQ125A timing mark

Ken, the mark will be there on the pulley but over time is gets 'hidden' by rust & paint blisters etc. I use a mild acid to clean the pulley surface but be careful of rubber parts. Once the mark is found you can use a contrasting paint to highlight it. I would be more concerned about not changing the timing belt in 20 seasons, when they break or skip a tooth out on the water you will be looking for a tow in. Should be part of your 2 year maintanence schedule. Aldo
