My friends boat has a 1990 Volvo AQ171C, 4 cylinder, DOHC I/O. The timing belt broke. Upon receiving the new belt, I noticed that there were five marks on the belt. The mechanic at the dealership said that these were timing marks. Two marks line up with camshaft pullies when they are at 12 o'clock. A third mark lines up with the water pump pully. The forth and fifth mark are close together at the crankshaft. My question is where to postion the crank. I tried 0 degrees TDC. It did not crank.

Should be mark on lower gear to align with mark on seal holder behind damper. My book AQ171. I thought the engine water pump driven by V belt. Check the other gaers/pullers are idle gear and adjuster gear/pulley.

There is a lot more to putting your timing belt on. First there is a reason why the belt broke. The most common reason is you have a bad idler. It keeps the tension on the belt. You need a real Volvo service manual to do the job right. If you have any more questions you can call me at 1-800-949-2189
