Have acquired a 1986 Bayliner Ciera with a Volvo Penta propulsion system. I have been able to id the outddrive (Penta 280SP) but so far have been unable to id the engine. I have been able to locate a partial number on the intake manifold that ends in GM.

Can anyone share some insight as to how I determine the engine model? It looks similar to a GM305 or GM350 but I need the Volvo id (AQ140 etc). Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Volvo Engine info

Thanks, Don but I still have the id problem. The list you refererced in your message has 17 elements that show engines used with the Penta 280 outdrive - none for the 1986 year. I still need a POSITIVE way to id the engine. Any other ideas?

Re: Volvo Engine info

There's a Casting # Cast in to the Block, on the bellhousing Flange, just behind the Port Head.............
It's usually hidden by a bunch of wires, or hoses in most applications.......

After you find That #,........
Go Here,.................
Actually,.... They explain Where to find the #s as well........... ;)

Good Luck.......

Re: Volvo Engine info

Volvo did put metal tags on the engine with the model and serial number stamped in, it was just above the starter on the V8's.
One problem with Volvo's numbering system is it had nothing to do with year, so the same number such as AQ 260 was used for many years. There were only A and B models of the 260, and since you have an 86, it would probably be a 260B.
You can find out from Bayliner what was put in the boat when new, just get your Hull ID number and call them Toll Free at 877-861-6494 and ask them. They will even send you a copy of the owners manual if you request it.

My old AQ200 (305) block had a serial # stamped into the RH top block face above the waterpump.
Its gone now as I've just had the block decked.
The block casting # will ID it though.
