Volvo exhaust bellow blew

Replaced both bellows in 2020 on a 2001 Volvo penta 5.0. This summer while on vacat boat ran great for 4 days. One afternoon went to take off (after switching skiers) and boat would not get on plane. When throttled down, heard a pop. Long story short the exhaust bellow popped (6inch tear).

boat ran fine afterwards, just louder

what would cause this?

what would cause this?

Sounds like a backfire. Does it have a holley carb?

what would cause this?

Ayuh,.... My guess is,..... It ran without water flow at some point, which burnt up the exhaust shutters, which fell down into the lower exhaust cavity, causin' a blockage, 'n the bellows blew off,....

Volvos do not have shutters

However, did you use volvo bellows or cheap aftermarket bellows

I’m wondering if your exhaust is clogging on one side and all the water is going to the other side. This could cause the side without water to really overheat and cause damage.
I’d probably want to inspect the exhaust manifolds and elbows at this point especially if they are original.
