Re: Volvo expert needed

It was recently pointed out to me that we are setting the engine to TDC
The book calls for 6 degrease BTDC? How would I determine the 6 degrease Below TDC?
Could this difference be the cause of my trouble?

Re: Volvo expert needed

The harmonic balance only has one line threw it.
The plate that is connected to the impeller, has markings on it goes from 0 being far right.
To 40 being far left mark. That plate is off when setting engine to TDC.
My question is how do I determine 6 degrease BTDC? Are you saying to set it to the Sixth mark on the harmonic balance with the plate on?

Re: Volvo expert needed

btdc means (before top dead center) not below,
lets start at the beginning with this thing! when you install the timing belt you want the cam and crank marks at top dead center, or 0 degrees.
after you get belt installed make sure there is no slack on the side without idler pully and that the marks are still at "0" on the cam and crank. they put a little tension on the idle\tensioner pully with a prybar, with empasis on alittle tension! then tighten your idler \tensioner pully bolt while maintaining tension! after that is all said and done check belt for any play, it should be snug with no more than 1\4 to 1\2 inch play! now on the timing tab that hangs over the crank pully (witch should be at "0" count your marks from zero to 6 degrees btdc (be sure that the marks are in incriments of 1 some manufacturers use a 2 degree incriment. make a mark on the 6 degree mark with white out or some other marking pen so you can clearly see the 6 degree mark. start the engine, and put your timing light on. now turn the distributor while the engine is running untill the mark on the crank pully lines up with your 6 degree mark and tighten down the distributor. the timing is set! and if you did it right and all things are equall it should be good to go! hope this clears up the timing end of it for you! good luck!

Re: Volvo expert needed

Thanks for all the GREAT advice!
Everything has been set to specs. Timing is not jumping anymore.
But I still can't get her up on plane? (Still no WOT) Not sure what else to check?
The engine is running better than it ever did. But @ 2500 rpm's she is still is dying? (ONLY UNDER LOAD) The carburetor has been rebuilt. It was also gone over again Buy someone else. (just to make sure)
Any advise would be great. Almost time for a hand grenade.
Thanks FENIXX3435

Re: Volvo expert needed

Could this be something to do with the prop (over-propped)!
Are you sure the prop was not changed before you acquired the boat.

Re: Volvo expert needed

Sounds like you have an air leak in the fuel system to me. When under load you are getting a lot of air in the system. Check all the hose and hose connections. If they have the 1/2" wide clamps, replace the clamps with the smaller 1/4" wide ones (mini clamps). Also check the pickup tube in the tank. A crack or even a plugged screen in the pickup tube would cause your problem.
A simple test would be to get a 6 gallon outboard tank and hook it up directly to the fuel pump and test run the boat. If it works, you know you have a fuel problem.

Re: Volvo expert needed

The prop has been married to unit since 1990. It's original. Could it not be spinning properly? (slipping)
I also have a new 12 gallon above deck tank that we have been using.
I'm sure it's not the fuel!

Re: Volvo expert needed

It isn't a problem of good fuel, it's a problem of getting the fuel to the fuel pump. If there is an air leak in one of the fittings, filter, anti siphon valve, pickup tube or some other connection the engine will run great when in neutral, but as soon as you put a load on it you use a LOT more fuel and that is when the air starts causing problems.
If you have a new plastic tank, make sure the vent is clear. I have found a couple of the plastic ones with vent hole not cut out.

Re: Volvo expert needed

I have been running to above board tank, and have now switched to the original tank. Same situation. I am still not getting up on plane. The boat seems to run fine in neutral, but I can't figure out why she won't plane off. Her RPM's get to about 3000, you can tell she is trying to get there. But for whatever reason, she can't. We are about out of answers. I am wondering if it is possible if the prop is not engaging properly or slipping? Kinda like a clutch would slip in a manual transmission of an automobile? According to my repair manual by Volvo Penta the specs on the carb are correct, so I am certain that issue has been resolved. Now, if anyone has any ideas, or further impute, I would be greatly appreciative of the help. So, far the assistance has been great, and I am grateful for it. Thanks for the Help.

Re: Volvo expert needed

Lets talk about your prop for a minute. You say the prop has been on the boat since new, have you had the boat since it was new? If the hub was slipping, you would get a lot of rpm, but no speed. So I would guess the hub is ok. How about the blades of the prop, are they in good shape? If they are bent, it would sure kill the rpm's.
Is the bottom of the boat clean and smooth?

Re: Volvo expert needed

Bottom of the boat looks like a new boat. It does not stay in the water more than a day. It is always cleaned after use. I am the second owner of this "glorious" vessel. The prop has a few scratches but is smooth and true. I get pretty good RPM's for the most part. Roughly, 3000 RPM is where I get, and no more increase on power or speed. Any more throttle, seems to bog down the engine. Then she tries to choke out. If I put her in Neutral at that point and give her a little juice, she seems to recover nicely. Can run around 2000, 2200 RPM's easy (purring like a kitten). I am starting to question my thoughts about the prop. I really don't know where to fish for the answers anymore. We have checked just about everything we can think of.

Re: Volvo expert needed

I think at this point, you have been into every part of it several times. Since you claim to "Not be a mechanic" why don't you take it to a Volvo Penta dealer and have them look at it. My guess is there is something you are overlooking or that you think was done correctly, but actually isn't.
You have spent more money in parts that didn't cure the problem than the dealer probably would have charged to fix it properly.
It's time to get it fixed so you can go boating.

Re: Volvo expert needed

I finally got her back, Just in time to winterize. She run's great! The trouble was the wrong jet in the carburetor. It's not something I ever changed. guess I was doomed from the start. I left her back in Sept. at a Volvo Penta dealer, Just got her back last week. Thank you to all who helped! I'm now ready come spring.
THANKS AGAIN FENIXX3435
